The renovation of this hospital is being carried out over a period of 10 years and includes a total of 35 sites. The building is in the form of a three-pointed star rising 11 floors high, with a span of 7.20 metres. Exceeding initial requirements, the architects sought to combine a renovation approach coupled to a review of the overall function that would anticipate needs and ensure that the installations would meet demands for the next 20 years. The first challenge lay in creating space for the phased operations by removing a series of functions, such as emergency services, a laboratory, a large kitchen and magnetic resonance unit. Finally, the architects were able to free a sufficient number of square metres to create good internal restructuring within the existing walls. Despite the span, today regarded as too narrow, they managed to create better operational space and more flexible circulation, more suited to the operating conditions of a modern hospital.
