On a site occupied by faculty buildings, the Université Libre de Bruxelles is implementing a re-urbanisation project formed of a mix of housing and offices, intended to bring continuous activity to the university campus. The five-storey apartment buildings of average size reinterpret the traditional Brussels plot by providing openings that constitute windows onto the development’s public spaces that consequently become an inherent part of the overall environment. The overall theme is green, with gardens, ponds and small squares combining to create a promenade linking the avenue that borders the site to the university forum. The project extends over 150 000 square metres, 40 percent given over to housing and 60 percent to offices, with the aim of restoring to this monofunctional site the “living” aspect of being an inherent part of the wider city.
