Roubaix Hospital Complex - Sterilization Services and Laboratory Wing

Roubaix
France

The new extension to the Roubaix Hospital adds sterilisation services and laboratories to the existing emergency and operating block facilities. An articulation ideally positioned between the more traditional domestic buildings, the future Mother/Child/Infant centre acts as a liaison with the logistical zone. A quiet, contemporary design of clean lines assures the polite insertion of the new architecture into the site.

Art & Build’s new 13,000 sqm maternity wing features two planted patios bringing nature, life and light into the heart of the building. The facility features a 92 bed capacity for obstetrics, gynaecological and neonatal care (excluding the operating block core), with 35 beds for Intensive care (including reanimation and constant surveillance), as well as technical and logistical services.
The wining team brings together SOGEA CARONI (Vinci Group), Art & Build and Escudié Fermaut architects, Projex Ingénierie, Diagobat and Acoustic et conseil. Delivery is expected towards the end of 2015.

The building is destined to accommodate small vaccine production units and the internal organization must therefore be flexible, allowing for rigorously distinct units of variable sizes. In addition to the conventional task of designing volumes and the aspect of the facades and surroundings, the architects cooperated closely with the GSK engineers on matters of safety for the building and its occupants.

New Maternity Unit for Colmar Civic Hospital

The competition brief called for a maternity unit as well as a medico-technical building. The available site is encircled by the existing Pasteur facility, the rue Betz and a parking lot to the northwest, bordered by a social housing neighbourhood. The Pasteur facility, designed in 1937 by architect W F Vetter, is the main location for the HCC (Hôpitaux Civils de Colmar). The strength of the existing architectural project remains symbolically significant to this day, partly due to the building’s expression of a realistic and humanistic vision of healthcare, underlined even today by the HCC.

This University Hospital is to become part of the Toulouse Cancéropole, a centre of excellence that brings together the medical, research and industrial skills necessary in combating cancer. For the architects, participation in this competition was an opportunity to study the rigorous separation of visitor, patient and staff flows required within a major and self-functioning complex. There was a need to create a medical organization that took into account the total isolation required by certain treatments that involve depressing the immune system.
