New Maternity Unit for Colmar Civic Hospital

Colmar
France

The competition brief called for a maternity unit as well as a medico-technical building. The available site is encircled by the existing Pasteur facility, the rue Betz and a parking lot to the northwest, bordered by a social housing neighbourhood. The Pasteur facility, designed in 1937 by architect W F Vetter, is the main location for the HCC (Hôpitaux Civils de Colmar). The strength of the existing architectural project remains symbolically significant to this day, partly due to the building’s expression of a realistic and humanistic vision of healthcare, underlined even today by the HCC.

Three new operating theatres including a video-surgery facility have been completed. The administrative and protocol zones, largely glazed, bring natural light into the operating areas. Bed circulation and operating theatres are treated with a lively touch of colour. Large photographs depicting floral themes decorate the staff working areas and are intended to provide visual relief and comfort to patients.

The URM project calls for new Medical, Emergency and Reanimation services, conceived as the operational heart of a vast site dedicated to the medical sciences (Purpan, Toulouse Hospital Centre). Conceived in connection with the new Pierre-Paul Riquet clinic or PPR, the building expresses, by its position privileged in entrance of the site, its own identity and benefits from a privileged position at the entrance to the compound.

Hospital of Toulouse - Rangueil

After winning a competition in 2005, Art & Build was tasked with extending and reorganising the Rangueil Hospital. The client stipulated that the new building was to be built in front of the existing hospital and the architects decided to make the most of the characteristics of the very sloping site. The new building stands on piles with an underground corridor and lifts linking it to the existing hospital. Laid out on four floors, it houses 20 operating theatres, 26 intensive care rooms and seven bedrooms for serious burns cases.
